ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA: A FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE


The ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA FESTIVAL is a vibrant and culturally significant event 

celebrated by the Anaguta people, an indigenous ethnic group residing in Jos North of Plateau State of Nigeria, and occupy the seat of the paramount ruler of the Local Government. This festival, deeply rooted in the traditions and heritage of the Anaguta community, serves as a colorful showcase of their rich artistic and cultural practices.


HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Anaguta people, also known as the Naraguta, have a long and storied history. Their traditions have been passed down through generations, with the ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA FESTIVALplaying a pivotal role in preserving and promoting their cultural identity. The festival’s originsare linked to the agricultural calendar, marking the beginning of farming season and offering thanks to God for life and seeing a new farming season. Over time, it has evolved to include a broader celebration of the Anaguta’s artistic and cultural expressions.


FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

a) TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE.

Music and dance are integral parts of the ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA FESTIVAL. 

Traditional drummers, flutists, and singers come together to create a vibrant auditory experience. The rhythmic beats of drums, the melodic tunes of flutes, and the harmonious chants resonate through the air, inviting participants to join in the celebratory dances. Common dishes include atoro, tikankam (porridge), cha-ti wen (tuwon acha), adankulen (cocoyam), ufondon (yam), cha tu katishi (tuwon masara), alauru (sweet potato), igilim (tamba), mapuru, kutum zhapa, ipene, ukuyu, tipara, Irene, iliu etc. Served with various soups and stews, highlighting the community's reliance on grains and vegetables.


e) SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT 

The ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA FESTIVAL is more than just a celebration; it is a reaffirmation of the Anaguta identity and a means of fostering unity within the community. The Anaguta Development Association (ADA), on behalf of His Royal Majesty Ujah Anaguta,  Anaguta Traditional council hereby invite all well-wishers, Anaguta sons and daughters to her 2024 ISHOKORI-ANAGUTA, ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE slated to take place as follows:


Date: 8/6/2024 (Saturday)

Time: 9:00am.

Venue: Rwang-pam Township Stadium, Jos.


Dress Code: Anaguta National colour (Green, Red, White and Gold) or Any Anaguta cultural 

attire.
